The mark itself
What the laser and the press actually leave.
Engraving has two tones and no ink; printing has every tone and no relief. Which one you want is mostly a question of whether the card carries a photograph — and, on metal, of which side you put the words on.
Bamboo, engraved
The laser burns the board itself. Two tones, no ink, and the grain runs through the letters.
Metal, engraved — the front
The mark is the bare steel under the black coating: a cool near-white silver, and the sharpest contrast we can make.
Metal, engraved — the back
The same laser, the same card, turned over. The back is plated differently and comes out a warm bronze — legible, softer, and no good for a code.
White plastic, printed
Full-colour ink, edge to edge. The only one of the three that can carry a photograph.

Why engraving cannot take a photograph: the laser burns two tones into the surface rather than laying down ink, so a face comes out as a woodcut rather than a portrait. Engraved bamboo and engraved metal are for type, line art and a name. If you want somebody’s photograph on the card, that is the white one. The full-color finishes on bamboo and metal take a photograph too, and are temporarily out of stock — there is an address field for each of them above.
